You Need To Get Your Wheels All Set For Winter

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

You may need to do some extra prepping for your car so it is ready for the winter months. During severe winter weather, you may have some issues that could arise. For those who have a newer vehicle, it may not matter much but you should still be cautious. It can save you quite a bit of money if you follow some basic tips.

Tire pressure may drop significantly during the winter months because of the cold. If you happen to monitor faithfully, you will have better gas mileage and minimize your chances of a flat tire. You must also avoid having your fuel tank run below the quarter mark. With regard to older cars, this can prevent the gas lines from freezing but it doesn’t apply to newer vehicles. But you should always have enough fuel to avoid being stranded. Make sure that you get an emergency kit made up of cold weather accessories like gloves and hats. You should also have jumper cables, flashlight, flares and basic tools.

Well before winter arrives, have each one of your fluids checked, because some of them are affected by the conditions found during winter. You actually should check your cooling system, especially when living in a place the temperatures get below freezing. Nearly all engine associated breakdowns, costing thousands of dollars, result from failures in the cooling system. Make sure your antifreeze is sufficient and check it throughout the winter. At the same time keep your windshield washer fluid with a liquid that won’t freeze. If your battery is getting older, check it out, because it could be a problem in winter. Ideally, just as with so many other areas regarding wheels, you will need to pay more attention to some things than others. What is more important for you may be less so for others, so you have to consider your unique circumstances. But we are not done, yet, and there is always much more to be uncovered. Still have more big pieces of the overall picture to present to you, though. We believe you will find them highly pertinent to your overall goals, plus there is even more. Remove any corrosion on your electric battery terminals, or your car may not start. The shelf-life of a battery is reduced with severe cold weather. To obtain extra protection, make sure those jumper cables sit in your vehicle at all times.

Your car might not be quite ready for an oil change, but do it anyway. When it comes to an older car or truck, you may want to use a light weight oil to keep elements lubricated in the cold weather. New cars at present use lighter oil making it not an issue. You may even want to swap your wiper blades for the wintertime as well. The new blades will be more effective in wiping off the ice and slush that builds up. You should also get your snow tires on as well for the traction. At the very least, purchase some good all-season radial tires.

It’s best if you can prepare yourself before the winter comes. If you’re not thorough, you may find yourself in a pile of trouble in the thick of winter. You’ll want to plan in advance and start focusing on it now. Watch SUV wheels.
